Children are especially vulnerable in the first 1,000 days of life because their immune systems are not yet fully developed. When children experience severe malnutrition at such a young age, the risk of mortality and\/or permanent disabilities is especially high.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation has helped more than 1 million children since its inception in 2004 and operates in Sub-Saharan Africa. Therapeutic feeding programs are offered in Malawi, Ghana and Sierra Leone, among others. In Sierra Leone, Project Peanut Butter established a local RUTF factory in Freetown, providing employment for local people. In addition, regional ingredients are used for food.<\/p>\n<p>With mobile clinics and direct contact with local communities, malnourished children receive therapeutic nutrition. Nutrition is combined with medical check-ups and counseling families during the recovery process, as part of Project Peanut Butter&#8217;s program.
