Yet many families there struggle with poverty, an unemployment rate estimated at 30 to 40 percent, and food insecurity: two-thirds of households experience moderate to severe food insecurity. For many of the children Moya works with, there are very few places where they can simply be children: safe, welcome, and cared for.<\/p><p><strong>Reconnecting children with nature<\/strong><\/p><p>Despite growing up surrounded by the mountains and farmland of the Stellenbosch region, a legacy of apartheid-era spatial planning still limits many of these children&#8217;s access to nature. Nature walks, outdoor learning and creative activities are now core to Moya&#8217;s work, helping children grow more curious, confident and engaged.<\/p><p><strong>A home in Klapmuts<\/strong><\/p><p>In 2024, Moya opened a small nature-based learning and aftercare centre in Klapmuts, now supporting around 30 children after school with homework help, meals, and time with trusted adults.
